Identity Theft: Prevention is Better than Cure

We never think that it will happen to us even though it is constantly in the news. Even shredding all of our personal documents and taking care about releasing confidential information isn’t enough to ensure that we are completely safe from ID fraud.

The fact is that ID theft relies upon our innocence and belief that we are always safe. The Internet is rife with con artists selling our personal details to others and once your name is sold, it is a recurring nightmare because it can be sold again and again. Alarmingly, many companies to whom you have given your details in good faith have had lapses in security and they may not have told you about them. You could be an innocent victim of ID theft without even knowing about it.

If you do find yourself a victim, it takes time and it costs to put it right and on occasion, it cannot be reversed. A good credit rating can be erased in moments by ID fraud! Victims can be arrested and stopped from performing everyday acts like opening a bank account, getting a mortgage, even getting a job.

Children are also vulnerable.

Thieves are stealing children’s names and using them safe in the knowledge that it might take many years before detected. It is only when the grown-up child experiences difficulties in later life with credit checks or police background checks that the truth is revealed. This has become an epidemic and worse, a lot of this criminal activity takes place in countries where the law is unable to act. And even if they do, it is a virtually undetectable crime.

Prevention is definitely better than cure but unfortunately, there is little in place to help us. Some ID theft monitoring happens but only after the event has occurred. However, there are some measures to prevent ID theft from occurring and this service is designed not only to pre-empt theft but also to warn you if it happens. All of us are vulnerable to this type of theft and unless we do something about it, it is equivalent to leaving your front door open, inviting criminals in!
